P for Plated date range
Does anyone know if silver plated badges marked with a P were only produced during WWII, which is the period I think of for them?
Also I think of it as only done by Gaunt? not sure where I got this from, probably wrong, though I only have this on badges I think are by Gaunt. I have for the SWB a HM gaunt 1943 with makers mark, a plated example with the P and the gaunt mark, another with just the P and one with no markings. the three plated badges have plated lugs but the HM has unplated copper/brass lugs

I think the copper lugs are replacements from the marks on the back.

I only know of Gaunt made examples, though I have one with a QC so they are not limited to WW2.

Thanks all.
So far we know gaunt and firmin used the P for Plated, during WWII & until some time after 1953.

Hi All
I have been collecting officer badges for quite some time and plated badges will always have plated lugs in my limited experience. To add lugs after the plating will likely damage the plating and mean it would have to be redone. Genuine silver badges, either hallmarked, silver marked (ie, stamped 'S' or just marked sterling) or even unmarked, will often have plain copper lugs with no sign of plating. Cheers, Alex |

The hallmarked badges from my collection have solid silver lugs; unmarked or sterling silver badges have brass or again solid silver lugs.
