Default Collar badge, Welsh Regiment or Monmouths.

I have just purchased this collar badge which was described as having been worn by the the Monmouthshire Regiment. On checking my copy of Colin Churchill's book, History of the British Army Infantry Collar Badge, I cannot find a similar badge in the Monmouth Regiment section.

There is, however, a very similar collar badge shown in the Welsh Regiment T.F. section. It is described thus, " In 1908, the unit underwent a major change of role becoming the 7th (Cyclist) Battalion (TF). The small dragon badge in gilding metal (Fig. 1151) was adopted as the collar badge, changing to a blackened version (Fig. 1152) upon the introduction of a Rifles dark green tunic (worn by most cyclist units) c.1912."

Hi

in Churchill/Westlake's 'Collar badges of the British army 1881 to present', there is a similar badge, #305. However it is definitely a very different design, wings are different, flame from the mouth, and appears longer and taller; which they attribute to Monmouthshire, 2nd Battalion.

cheers, Tim

in churchill 1152 is blackened, 1151 is gm, churchill 1923 in gm is for 1st monthmouthshire whilst churchill 677 is for 1st breckockshire tf bn according to churchil on page 311 the "monmouthshire dragon" was used by other units before the mons was formed

in many cases the illustrations are too dark (I bought the first edition and they are as bad as the other edition) to make out the finer details which makes it a difficult subject to be precise on imo

I entirely agree that the pictures are too dark to be of much use, so bad in fact that I thought that the loop on the tail of Fig. 1923 was unvoided.

I also that that there was a different shape to the grassy ground.

I quess that you pays your money and you takes your choice.

Some superb photographs there, thank you for posting them. I will look in my Welsh album to see if I have any others that I can post.
