Default Recce Corps Mystery?

This photo shows a young soldier wearing the badge of the Reconnaissance Corps in a Scots tam o'shanter, the formation sign on his arm that of 48th South Midland Division.

The 48th Recce Bn was formed in October 1941 from 5th Bn, The Glosters and was subsequently reduced to a Company and then became a Squadron before being absorbed by 80th Recce in 1943.

None of which would seem to account for the headgear.

Thoughts please.

Jon

Default 48th Ind Recce Sqn

Jon,

The 48 Recce Bn were formed from the 5 Bn Glosters on 16th July 1941. 8th Jan 1942 the Bn was redesignated as the 43rd Bn, Reconnaissance Corps after transferring to the 43rd (Wessex) Division.

The 48th Independant Reconnaissance Company was formed in Consett on 4th Jan 1942 from the disbanded 15th Bn,, Recce Corps. C Coy moved as the 48th Ind Recce Coy to the temporary location of Donington, Lincolnshire and with the W.E. for an Ind Recce Coy in a (L.E.) Div. as under 11/1931/12A/1 notified in A.C.I's, 11th Dec, 1941. (taken from their War Diary entry 4/1/42)

The War Diary for 48 Ind Recce Coy and later Sqn exists for Jan to Oct 1942.

Hope this helps,

Les.
