Smile Cloak chains

Can anyone tell me when the Guards wore cloak chains?

I have a Coldstream and a Grenadier Guards cloak chains and I presume the other Guards wore them although I am not sure what the Welsh Guards looked like if they had them.

Rob, are you certain this is GG and not artillery? I believe the arty wore a similar 55mm grenade badge like this in both brass for regs and WM for vols.

I believe this is a Guards type cloak chain, and a nice early one from what i have seen in photo's on the internet, the smaller Grenade is the more modern type. There is also a type with a swirl pattern on, that is for the Life Guards. These were probably worn after the Crimea, when the Cape was not actually fitted to the Greatcoat. IMHO

I served thirteen years in the Welsh Guards and did more than my share of public duties. I have seen Welsh Guards officers putting on and taking off cloaks many times but I am ashamed to say I cant for the life of me remember what the cloak chain looked like?

Default Welsh Guards

I happened to bump into my ex-next door neighbour earlier this week was in the Welsh Guards and I asked him what period the cloak chains were worn and he did not think it was during his service which ended c1981/2.

The ones I recently bought certainly have some age to them and I was really trying to establish a timeline, thanks for the replies.

Andy,

That would be a realistic timeline, I have a similar Coldstream Guards cloak chain, what with the Irish Guards being formed in 1900 and the Welsh Guards in 1915 maybe all I need is a Scots Guards cloak chain to complete what was worn.

Not sure when the pattern changed but all Regiments of Guards wear the same Atholl Grey 3 button cape with Large regimental buttons and a hook & eye at the neck.

Tinto,

Thanks for the link, it could be Scots Guards although I tend to think that the style was the same as a cap badge, yours could of course be London Scottish or any other Scots cloak chain.

Cool Scots Guards Cloak chain

Here's a link to a Scots Guard cloak chain, ebay 252774866073, this has the badges which are voided as opposed to the normal Scots Guards cap badges.
