Default Coldstream Guards with cloth insert

I've become the custodian of this, 85mm tall, gilding metal . Not seen one of these with the cloth insert? common? rare? Other ranks? NCOs?

Any ideas? (CG not my strong point )

oops - I spelt 'forum' wrong in the watermark.

Mike,

Not much help I'm afraid but have never seen anything similar, the red backing cloth would only be correct for the central cross too if you were to compare it to the colours used for Officers and Warrant Officers Cap Stars.

Look forward to finding out more.

Regards Simon.

Looking again at this Star, do you think that the central cross sections that are voided have been professionally removed at the point of manufacture or is it possible that someone has cut these out at a later date, it's difficult to see from the images.

Is it possible that this should of had an enamelled plate in the centre, which somebody has removed and replaced? The centre disc doesn't not appear to match the age of the rest.

Perhaps it is Canadian. Governor General’s Foot Guards? It has the look of a Valise Star.

Here's the voiding, I'll leave it as a link as the pic is a bit big:

It's got me thinking about 'events' the the Guards might be involved in. Royal coronations/ funerals, durbars etc. I wonder if there was ever a tendency to embellish insignia for the 'high profile' players? Possible?

Mike,

Thanks for the larger images, to my eye at least it appears that some of the voids have been removed in a rather haphazard manner and so may well be unofficial. Speaking as an ex Guardsman I have never come across an incident where an item of uniform or insignia has been embellished in this manner and it certainly would need to be of a lot higher standard to pass an Inspection by any Senior Rank IMHO.

Regards Simon.
