Default Help with a family member

I am a bit of e newby regarding research, so I wonder whether anyone can help me with any information on two long dead family members.

First, Albert Jarvis who I think served in the Essex Regt WWI.

Second, Frederick Andrews, born Black Notley, Essex, possibly Essex Regt.

Thanks in advance

Rob

Default Albert Jarvis

Phil, thanks for the reply, long time no chat . . !

From what I remember family saying from over a long time ago, Albert was quite badly wounded on the Western Front.

Not much help really.

Same for Frederick, records don't mention Blk Notley. One mentions Colchester.

Default Family records

Phil, I don't even know if Fred served in the army, my Grandfather was graded unfit due to ulcerated legs which hounded him to his last days.
I do have a family member still alive at over ninety who I will have to contact and see if she can show any light on Fred.

Regards Rob

Phil,

The second man sounds promising as my family had connections with little Saling.

The third man also sounds promising, as I understand it from talking to his sister (my grandmother who was 99 years old at the time) I think he was sent to Ireland when recovering from wounds, but this may not be correct .

Greetings Rob.
Bear with me mate, I'm having a look now.

I have found two named Albert Jarvis, both 5th Battalion chaps.

Enlistment numbers:
1367 becoming 250079.
2751 becoming 250588

I'll get back to you once I've conducted some more research.

Regards.

Brian

Brian, many thanks, as an Essex man I should have investigated my family years back, but they rarely spoke of their past experiences.

Regards Rob

Greetings Rob.

I have found 4 chaps named Albert Jarvis, two of them served in 5th Battalion.

I am almost certain this is your ancestor:

Born 2.12.1892 in Great Leighs.............a few miles from Great Notley.

Enlisted February/March 1912 in Chelmsford.

Number 1367, changing to 250079.

KIA 26.3.17 in Palestine and commemorated on The Jerusalem Memorial.

If you send me your email address on a PM, I'll send you all the paperwork and other stuff I've found in relation to him and his family.

Regards.

Brian

Greetings again.

I've just realised that it wasn't Jarvis who was from Notley, but the Andrew fellow. Doh Doh

I'll work on Andrews now, but if you would like the Jarvis stuff, let me know and I'll send it.

Regards.

Mr. Doughnut.

Frederick Percy Andrews was born in 1893. His birth was registered in Halstead which covers the Braintree district which includes Black Notley. He is shown on the 1911 cencus as a 17 year old wheel wright. He married a Gertrude Alston, in 1919, the marriage was registered in Halstead.

I think that, given his known prowess with a cartwheel, he may have served as T3/024049 in the Army Service Corps.

Smile Family history

Thanks a lot for this information, the problem I have had is that Andrews is a very common name in Essex, when I lived in Great Chesterford which is in North Essex there were four separate families of Andrews living in the village with no connections to each other as far as we could ascertain and the most named graves in the churchyard or funeral list.

If Frederick Percy Andrews was a wheelwright and his Father was a Blacksmith it might be the correct man. I never even thought about what he did and the only job I heard about was he worked as a deckchair attendant at Clacton, but this was probably a retirement job.

Thanks again Rob

The 1911 census shows that the father, Charles Andrews was a blacksmith and farrier. His wife Eliza was a housewife.

There were three sons, Leonard, wheelwright/coach builder, Frederick, wheelwright and coach builder and William, school boy and a daughter, Bessie.

They do not seem to have used their full names on the census.

They appear to be the only Andrews family in Black Notley in 1911.
