It seems that they also come without a scroll!

Your badge is from the same die as the one in the Marsh catalogue. Note the banana fingers, drag queen eyebrow, fang-like connected neck spikes, overly large hillock shape esp. left hand side.

You can also see the seeding on the scroll is extremely linear in relatively neat rows especially between the T and H, the E and B, and the two F’s.

Over 97% of the badges in Marsh are pure fakes, newly cut dies made in the 1970s.

The attached badges are all from the same die and were it not for the 15mm Gaunt mark I’m sure most members would not doubt the BB or GM badges as they are good strikes and show signs of wear also. Nonetheless both are without a doubt 1970s or later repros.

There are a great many repros from this die on eBay, quite a few exhibit a loss of detail on reverse of the scroll. Your badge also shows this feature.

I would take an awful lot of convincing and need to see some tangible evidence to believe that 1. this was ever an original die and 2. it was used to strike officers silver badges.

We know that badgeman had access to many of the Marsh dies in the early 2000s and did a line of silver badges.

Indeed int.militaria are selling silver repro badges from the same die albeit it now significantly more worn and has lost a tail part.

It can on occasion be a red herring to presume quality = genuine. There are a handful of badges where I’d regard certain fakes as being of higher quality or superior craftsmanship than some originals.

Thank you, perfect explanation. We all learn so much more from threads like this when a clear explanation is given rather than decrying an item as fake with no reason given.

Thanks again

Paul

Looking at the proper one shown by Keith in post 19, the Birmingham Mint version seems very similar, although fitted with a slider. Perhaps unsurprising given that the Birmingham Mint set was made by GAUNT probably using their original dies?
Here they are side by side:
