Default 17th Lancers (Old Gaunt)

Hi All

A new acquisition.... broken you say ..... but a belter none the less! This is a rare beast in any condition.

17th Lancers Officer, i think its solid silver (if not its certainly plated) ..... and I think its the large collar (basically the Cap Motto size) worn in the Vic/Ed period. If it was hallmarked it would have been in the missing bones.

** UPDATE*** :- the loops were definitely short "D" loops. Its silver plate.... as you can see the back of it retains the silver plate and the face of it is mostly down to the white metal.

.....this is how it would have looked. Note the factory cut voids between the cheeks and top bones..... hence the above bones breaking under the stress of polishing. The example below was described as "Sterling Silver" in the auction info with no back image.... so I am assuming no hallmark? Its also has x3 loops N/E/W.

.....here is an image of the large collars being worn in the Edwardian Imperial period. (see more here https://www.paoyeomanry.org.uk/Motto/Gaunt1.htm )

Yes, a sturdy badge despite the cuts, damage caused by being ripped of a garment?

Smile 17th Lancers

Whilst I am no expert on Hallmarked officers badges I would have thought the hall mark would have been on the reverse of the skull rather than the missing bones, not much room on the bones, more on the skull.

Apart from my thoughts it is a cracking badge, one I would welcome on my board, if this is a collar badge you would have thought they would turn up more often as they were worn in pairs albeit a long time ago.

Rob

Take a look at the link I put in..... you will see that the early Gaunts were marked in the Top bones.

Re Large Collar Motto..... they probably didn't last long. The image I show is the only one i have found (in that size). I can date it because in that group photo containing the 17L Officer is the PAOLIY Adjutant from the 21st Lancers (Captain Robinson) after his return from the 2nd Boer War.

Default 17th Lancers hallmarks

I attach photos of two early hallmarked ones from my collection with marks on scroll, not the bones - B&P 1898 and JRG&S 1902 which I believe are cap badges. For interest, I also include an extra large ORs badge which looks Victorian but I would welcome any ideas?

Hello Denis

first of all thank you very much for showing these. You have confirmed the Bent & Parker Motto for me (see here https://www.paoyeomanry.org.uk/Motto/BP.htm )

I have the larger one.... and I think its a saddle roll end motto from the Victorian period. The 1902 Gaunt proves also that the HM was stamped where they could fit it. the B&P is a belter..... first one I have seen with a full HM.

I have just received the Motto this morning and it does have a "D" loop, so it is a collar, .... thats been stretched..... it is silver plate.

I would love to have some close up individual images of your hallmarked B&P and Gaunt for the website?

Hi Griff,
Thanks for your reply. I will do some close up photos for you. I also have a 1940 HM one F&S plus a JRG&S marked SILVER not S (unusual for them), would you like photos of those as well?
Regards Denis

Hello Denis

Thank you very much!

Could I have photos of the others as well please Your collection has just modified the website in the Gaunt collection. It appears that Gaunt used two dies or at least had two different male dies? https://www.paoyeomanry.org.uk/Motto/GauntMenu.htm

I will PM you my email address if thats a better way to get the images to me?

Default Large 17th Lancers

Denis, the large 17th Lancer badge with three loops has been suggested as to being an early "Chad" arm badge.

Default 17th Lancers

Thanks Rob, it is a very deep striking, much more so than the usual cap badge. Pre 1900 do you think?

Thanks Griff, it was thought to possibly be an early "Chad" in a previous post, but I think you have nailed it with this information.
