Default Public Schools Battalion

I have read that the Public Schools Battalion was attached to the Middlesex Regiment, but there also seems to be a link to the Royal Fusiliers.

Would anyone have more info on this unit please, and/or be able to tell me which cap badge or badges they would have worn?

With thanks,

Peter.

Default PS battalions

Hi. Both regiments fielded public school battalions during the first world war. In the case of the Middx it was only one, the 16th and for the R.Fus it was four, the 18th,19th,20th and 21st. Regards, Andrew.

Peter

16th (Service) Battalion (Public Schools) was formed in London on 1.9.14. by Lt-Col. J.J.Mackay and after formation they were moved to Kempton Park racecourse and in December of that year, moved to Warlingham.

In July 1915, they moved to Clipstone Camp and were attached to 100th Brigade in 33rd Division.

In August they were moved to Perham Down Barracks, near Andover, where they remained until 17th November 1915, when they landed at Boulogne.

25th February 1916 they left Division and transferred to GHQ Troops and on
25th April 1916 they transferred to 86th Brigade in 29th Division.

On the First Day of The Somme the Battalion suffered 522 casualties, 22 officers and 500 other ranks.

The Battalion was disbanded on 11th February 1918.

There's more if you Google them.

Regards
Brian

Good man. I reckon these badge fairs would collapse without the support of the BBB.
