Default Fife & Forfar Yeomanry, WW1 era - different sized cap badges?

I would be grateful if anyone can shed light on whether there were two sizes of cap badge in use by officers of the Fife & Forfar Yeomanry, during the WW1 era?

Looking at the attached photo, which apparently shows two very different sizes of cap badge for Fife & Forfar Yeomanry.

Any insights appreciated!

Regards to officers a smaller badge was worn on the coloured cap, however, this stopped being worn prior to WW1. See a lovely example here https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ictureid=46378 . However, with Yeomanry there are often no hard fast rules and nothing surprises me.

If your question is based around the small circular Lambourne badge it is a complete mystery. No one, even Keith Hook who has been collecting Yeomanry since the 1950s and made trips to Cupar and Kilkardy to find out information on this badge has any tangible information as to when it was worn, where it was worn, what it was worn on and by who. No publication answers any of these questions either.

Additionally there is to my knowledge no photograph of it in wear which is why I’d like to see the whole of the picture you’ve shown please. I would be surprised if it is an officer’s badge as the badge is in GM rather than gilt or bronzed finish as you’d expect.

For me these circular badges date to WW1 as thus far no badge marked by Lambourne categorically pre or post dates this conflict and we know from Board of Trade Labour Gazette records that Lambourne’s we’re awarded contracts in 1915, 1916 and 1917.

It’s a fake. I’ve previously corresponded with Keith Hook re F&FIY and F&FY at length. He told me that Burgoyne's history published circa 1905 describes the crowned oval badge as worn by only the five permanent staff sergeant majors on a khaki cap with brown leather peak. Otherwise it was worn as an NCOs' arm badge in bronze apparently on both arms in khaki and silver or silver plate or hall marked on dress uniform. The Coronation edition of the Ogilby Trust booklets shows a corporal in blue jack with chevrons and the IY armbadge on right arm only so it seems to have continued as an arm badge for NCOs until 1914.

You are quite right, that particular seller has been mentioned before and not in a very favourable light either.

Hi Doug,
I think the man on the right is wearing a collar badge.
Cheers,
John

It could be the small f.s. cap badge as per the one in my link. On reflection I think it is, rather than the circular badge.

Yes, I would agree, it does not have the circular background.

Also, I have now found the attached photos at IWM, which more clearly show the smaller badge in use by officers of the Fife & Forfar Yeomanry, including two gents who were commanding officers. One of the images seems to have been transposed as the horse is heading in the wrong direction!

Its not transposed as his Sam Browne is over his correct shoulder.

Looks like collar badges in use on the Forage Cap.

regards

Indeed, should have noticed that! Makes one wonder if they were short on cap badges, as I would imagine that the direction of the horse would have been noticed at the time.
