Default An interesting Motto

Hi All

I got this today, a "bronzed" Motto. Its the first I have seen and its pretty worn as you can see. I have also put it alongside the white metal and the silver version.

* Better pics when it arrives.

No.... this particular Motto type, often referred to as the "No ears" (there are two types) is a hard one to pin down. This is the first "bronzed", of its type, I have ever seen.... and like the "SILVER" version is a rare one. The white metal is quite common and found with a tapered, straight (with and without crimp) slider.

The book “Regimental Badges” by Major T J Edwards contains a line drawing of this particular Motto on page 83 of his first edition book and has it listed as the badge of the 17th/21st Lancers. The first edition was produced in 1951.

It looked older than that, just by the design, I thought it would have been 17th and not 17th/21st

Until I see some photographic evidence of this Motto being worn ...... its a "maybe". I do have the other type in the lapel of an old comrade post Great war..... but not this one yet.

Looks like it started life with a slider looking at the stump in the middle of the skull ?

Common feature on this Motto Mac.... even on the Officers Silver (that is real silver). ..... it is actually stamped "S.SIL" within that feature. The lettering, in the scroll, is "Hobbed" .... so it does appear to be manufactured properly.

Hi All

After 20 mins in white vinegar and then a toothbrush and washing up liquid clean much grime and filth was removed. There are traces of the bronze coat in the back ...nothing on the front.

The motto has a good weight.... it is brass.... but visibly slightly smaller than the stamped white metal. Its the same die but as if a bit of the circumference has been lost?

Here are the close ups.
