Default WW1 Colour Patch Numerals

Does anyone have the measurements of the numeral attached to this patch. I collected some similar numerals and am wondering if they are one and the same.

Cheers Nick

Hi Nick,
I think that numeral is 5/8ths inch. The authorised size was 1/2 inch as I recall but in practice they differed - the 1/2 inch oxidised ones might have come out of the AIF stores system but the brass items probably conformed to what was available through the British system or local purchase.

Two examples that I've collected. Both are exactly the same size, though as you can see different lugs. Badge with hexagonal lug is lighter and slightly more like the badge pictured. They were not collected as a set and the two lugged version came with 5 others, some with a small piece of black square felt, NZ maybe?

1 MT Coy AASC Mike but worn without the numeral by HQ Aust Corps MT Coln and with 1-6 by the companies.

bc, not sure about the 10mm letters, I know 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch numerals were worn by both PMF and CMF corps units during 1906-21 above their shoulder titles.

The 20mm numerals might be those worn on the front of the hat and cap by the CMF 1912-21, Investment is the guy who might have the measurements of those.

Scotch, perhaps yours are the British example of the figure 1, the hex lug is not generally an indicator of Australian stuff.

I think you're right Keith. With no provenance to be anything else I'd say British as well.

Cheers Nick

Sorry I tell a lie (well it was 0430 and in a rush to go to work) - HQ Aust Corps MT Coln had a black cloth circle in the centre of the triangle.

I'll take a photo of the others and post, I do recall that the NZ Rifle Regiment had Black Felt/ Cloth as a background to some of their badges, just can't remember seeing one with with the numerals. The examples I have are centered on a black square,

Hi Keith,
These are the only number one numerals I have in my collection.
The larger numeral is 19 mm and the smaller numeral is 17 mm.
I've attached a picture showing both measurements of the numerals in inches, as well.
As mentioned in another post elsewhere the brass numerals I have measure between 19 mm and 20 mm in height.
Cheers,
Invest

Haven't got a scan at present, but I have two types of 1 numerals and several sizes. One type is (as shown in this thread) has a square serif at the top, the other has a pointed serif. I have often wondered whether one type was earlier than the other, or just a manufacturer's variation.
