1 CACR shoulder insignia
There has been a lot of discussion about the 1 CACR cap badges, but little has been posted about the shoulder titles.
The regiment had a bevo title made in Holland and this is the pattern that is correct for the SWW period. Melton titles exist for the unit, and research by Bill Miller indicates that these were likely ordered by the 1 CACR, but only arrived as the unit was in the process of being disbanded. Titles for the 1 CACR were regimentally procured and not authorized. CMHQ indicated that the regiment was, officially, to be wearing Canadian Armoured Corps titles. The melton pattern has been reproduced. Attached, image of the shoulder titles. Top, the bevo type weave title as worn during the war. Second, this title "copies" the lettering found on the bevo pattern, note the "G". This title appears to be the title that was ordered by the 1 CACR and arrived as the unit was being disbanded. When titles were ordered from embroidery firms, samples or drawings were submitted as patterns. Existing titles were often the patterns that were used. This appears to be the case when the bevo and the melton title in the second row are compared. Additionally, this pattern has a backing material of cotton. The backing cotton is found in various colours, tan, green, and black. The next example is curious. It is made in melton, but note the somewhat different lettering font. It has the shredded paper stiffening.

Thanks Bill
Bill:
Thanks for the info on the CARC Regt. titles. The info allowed me to confirm that the melton title in my collection is the number two in your picture. Another great job. Moe. |
