Liverpool Pals arm badge ?

I was sent this picture many years ago.It is Pte. Frank Nicholson, C Company,19th Kings Liverpools and the photo was taken in April 1918.

I have never been able to identify the badge half way down the right arm.

Only part of the arm badge is visible but it appears to be a wing outlined in a dark colour on a light background.

Any help as to what it is,or might be, much appreciated.

Dunno what it is, but I've seen this or a very similar photo before - posted for ID on GMIC or WAF some time back?

Similar to my first impression - a defect or something superimposed on the image. Wonder if it's postally used card and has a frank mark to the back that has damage the image?

I think its real..... I have just done some work on the image and its definatley part of the uniform.

I think its the top front wing of the "Liver Bird" .... a cloth arm badge. Similar to the Liverpool FC badge.

Griff MJ has very kindly worked some magic on the arm badge and it should now be possible to see the part of the badge in the photo more clearly.

I am also attaching some Liver Birds.

The first (which came from a Forum member ) is unidentified.

The second is a modern Formation Sign and the third a chrome liver bird worn on battledress as an arm badge by the 5th Kings in the 1950`s/60`s

I have heard that the 5th Kings wore a Liver Bird arm badge in WW1 and that the design was copied as a helmet badge by one of the companies of 5/8 Kings more recently but I have never seen an example either in the flesh or on a photo.

I have never heard of the Liverpool Pals wearing a Liver Bird arm badge but anything is possible.

What exactly is it you are referring to? There are probably half a dozen differing types of chrome Liver Bird.

The first image (unidentified) is a Liverpool City Police , pre. 1919 Sergeants arm badge. For wear on tunics they were in silver bullion wire. For wear on outer clothing they were in embroidered white/cream cotton as shown in the image.
