Norfolk Veterans Badge
Hello Everyone.
I recently obtained a lapel badge which has the following text on a blue enamel band surrounding a gilt Britannia on a red enamel background: 1st V.B. NORFOLK REGT. VETERAN I would like to ask if any Forum member can expand on my non-existent knowledge on either the badge or its parent organisation? Kind regards, Malcolm. |

There was the 1st VB upto 1908 when it became the TF Battalion.
There was also the Volunteer Battalions in 1918 which replaced the VTC units. It could be either. Alan |

Hi all
I think that mine is just slightly different, not round but more "fan" shaped. It was the "Veteran" bit that intrigued me. If I think of it, I'll fire up the camera! |

Is there anyway to confirm, one way or the other, which “Veteran” organisation the round badge represents?
Kind regards, Malcolm. |

The word 'veteran' is not ofter used in British military associations, 'Old Comrades Association' being more usual.
It begs the question, what were the the 1st V.B. Battalion, Norfolk Regiment veterans of? Did the they serve in South Africa? If so, would Boer War or South Africa Veterans be more accurate? Possibly difficult to get it all on the badge though. I also wonder if the badge was issued for a special event such as the disbandment of the Volunteer Battalions rather than as an association badge as many of the younger members would have transferred across to the T.F. in 1908. The 1st V.B. Norfolk Regiment served in South Africa during the Boer War. I believe they organised annual dinners in Norwich. But if this is the case, I dont know when they began or ended. Kind regards, Malcolm. |

Found a photo of the badge on a dealer's website , no more info but it has Vaughtons Ltd Birmingham makers mark . This would date the badge to post 1902/03 as that was when the "Vaughtons Ltd" name was introduced. .
