Hi Terry,
It is WAAS - Women's Auxiliary Army Service. Size sounds about right. Collars same size as cap badge but are a facing pair. Are roughly two designs (different manufacturers) and both come as brass and oxidized, so 4 sets of badges. There are also economy cast versions, locally done in SA using lead and a few done in brass in Egypt. There was a small contingent of WAAS that went overseas. The brass badges were worn on a olive drab gaberdine uniform (these were private purchase, mainly by officers and senior NCO's) and the oxidized badges were worn on a khaki drill uniform by recruits. Even though that was the norm, it is noted that the brass and oxidized badges have been seen worn on both the gaberdine and khaki uniforms. Colins Hodgkins website shows the two versions nicely https://www.signals-badges-collection.com/sa-waas.html The WAAS also had an Artillery section that wore SA Artillery Cap, Collar and Shoulder title badges in Oxidised finish. And then there was another section called the Special Signals Service that wore SA Signal Corps cap, collar and shoulder title badges. My Gran's sister was in the SSS. Yes it is cool that she served, but so did my Gran. She was a WAAF and their brother was in the SAAF (Radio operator). Their father also served during WWI in German South West Africa campaign and East Africa campaign. During WWII he was in essential services (fireman). I am fortunate to have his medals, my grans medals and the brothers medals. Unfortunately my great aunts medals ended up in the States with her and somewhere along the line went missing.
