Default British Military Lanyards

Following up on the interest in lanyards in recent posts here is my starter. I do not collect lanyards but find that I have eleven picked up mainly in job lots with other badges over the last 50 years!

A number are unidentified so help from members would be appreciated. I also post an extract from the 2004 JSP which describes lanyards approved at that time. Note that not all were ordnance issue - but it does not say which. I also have the NSNs and descriptions of more lanyards (again recent) and will post later.

do you have access to Osprey Elite Series no. 14, The British Army in the 1980's? Pages 59 & 60 have details on lanyards.

Some input from that publication,

Green & Black - 6 & 7 Gurkhas (WOs, Staff Sgts, Sgts & Cpls)
Black-Green -Scarlet 4 Greenjackets (NCOs)
Amber & Black (perhaps your gold & black) - D Coy. 1 Yorkshire (sgts & above)

there are many units listed as various shades of blue, Dark Blue, Blue no's 2, 3, 7, 10 & 14 (I do not know my shades of blue well enough to diferentiate between them).

If you do not have the publication and would like a copy of the section on lanyards PM me your contact details and I will oblige.

John

Default Lanyards

John,

Thank you. I do have that publication and will have a look. You are correct on colour shades which are difficult to discern and also fade. Here is a photo of a selection of Intelligence Corps cypress green lanyards with a number of colour variations.

I have posted these before but do so again to keep as much information as possible on lanyards together in one thread.

Top lanyard -5th Kings Liverpools in the old volunteer colours green, black and silver, introduced for wear on the battledress in 1950`s.

Bottom lanyard- 6th Kings Liverpools in green and red ( I have another example of this lanyard which is thinner ) not sure of precise dates it was in use but believed pre 1936 and throughout WW2.

P.B.

Default Lanyards.

We have just been involved in a write up on RAC Training Regiments and it was mentioned that each had different coloured lanyards; so I imagine it would be quite difficult to list all regiments of the army.
54th. RAC TR yellow
59th. " " Red
57th. " " Black
62nd. " " Green/Yellow (RECCE)

Default RMA Sandhurst

This is the Sovereign's Company lanyard as worn (by the champion company - mostly by Rhine Company) in the period September 1961 to August 1963.
Sovereign's Company RMA Sandhurst 1961-63.jpg

College lanyards were in the same style, but in a single colour:

Old College - Red
(Blenheim, Dettingen, Inkerman, Waterloo Companies)

New College - Blue
(The Somme, Gaza, Ypres Companies)

Victory College - Yellow
(Alamein, Burma, Normandy, Rhine Companies)

Worn on No 2 Dress and BD but not (not) on No 1 Dress.

Default Lanyard Project??

Just to make some sort of contribution to this post and whether or not a "Lanyard" project starts or not. There are 2:-
1) A Women's Transport Service lanyard from WWII - still attached to its uniform - but separated for this pic. The picture colour is extremely close to its "real-life" colour - the black background seemed to help.

2) A lanyard that was attached to a Parachute Regiment post WWII BD - however, its in very good condition, so I am not sure whether its correct for the period, or whether its actually representative of what they would have worn - only that it was fitted to the BD....

Anyway, here it is. Whether the colour comes out in the pic or not, its the "ever-faithful" lightish Khaki colour......

David,
Thanks. Lanyards photographed on a black background do show colour better on my screen.

For the sake of completeness, 43 Cdo RM in 1964 wore red/yellow twisted.
