Thank you

Definitely a good one. So far, OSD badges in general have not been subject to much restrikes or faking due to their nature. One of the few relatively safe areas of badge collecting.

It’s a fake.

Another from the Martin Marsh fake catalogue. Bronze repros exist for RHG, 1LG and 1&2LG badges. They have been made and finished to a better standard i.e. die casting and full voiding of the ‘v’.

I’ve taken the liberty of lightening your picture to highlight the points. Note the poor attempt a laurels (too large, too circular and just outlines) and the distinctive (truncated) crown shape. To the eye the ‘v’ has a slight lean to it. These are features prevalent throughout the MM series of Household Cavalry fakes and they were clearly all made by the same hand.

I’ve also attached some pictures to highlight my points and the different finished these fakes can be found in with the die cast back etc.

Whilst broadly speaking there are fewer repro OSD badges produced by die casting from fake dies I would certainly not brand this branch of the hobby relatively safe, as evident here. Also lost wax castings have improved greatly in recent years with the use of silicone moulds.

There is even a G&E version of this fake. Again note the shape of the crown, leaning ‘v’, lily pads for laurels etc. http://www.whartonmilitaria.co.uk/de...&item=BBAC0002

Have to agree with Luke it’s a fake OSD, as he said with the regiments mentioned they have been faked through from other ranks to these OSD , with these badges if things look good with out the common attached V it’s the laurels that give it away for me for the reasons Luke mentioned .

Thank you for pointing this out, and thank you for your time.
Oh well, one to Mag to Grid!
I cannot remember where and when I got it, or how much I paid for it, because I can't remember it doesn't feel so bad!
Cheers

Sadly, those do often turn up in fairly mature collections often with really good items and they always tended to have been bought with the quite genuine belief that they were original, no matter how much was actually paid.

Well, damn, I would have staked my life on that! Looks like I will have to revise my ideas on OSD as well
Is there any area of British badge collecting that has not been tainted to a large degree?

WW2 plastics are probably the safest. The only reproductions which spring to mind are the Parachute Regt and Army Air Corps.

Plastic cap badges are a good start with as Luke said very few copies but can get very expensive for the rarest ones as I know from experience :eek Don’t give up on the OSD I collect these and try to have one for each of the regiments that wore them to sit alongside the Other Ranks of that regiment and in the main they are not copied ( apart from those mentioned!!) as with any badge always have a check on the forum until you are confident in them .
