It's not the year that would be written but the last 4 of his regtl number. Often it's only the last 3 digits.

On Herrick tours, clothing was marked with the individual's ZAP number - first 2 letters of surname and then the last 4 of the regtl number so Cpl Smith 25006574 would write SM6574.

Thanks for this. It confirms it is military and was worn on Desert DPM.
Now just to find out what it is!

Thaanks for this. That makes perfect sense when one looks at it. Do REST ( Royal Engineers Search Team) go on Police Search Team courses? I know REST have some really specialized search kit available to them?

Default Police Search Team

REST(Royal Engineers Search Team) members do not go on Police Search Courses. The basic Police Search Course us normally ran in Force by the Force POLSA's(Police Search Advisors). Police search courses are generally to facilitate evidence gathering or missing persons. The intermediate course has a CT element and is a more in depth course delivered to Police in Force by POLSA and Military(RE/RLC). Polsa used to go to Gib barracks for more in depth training but I am unsure if this is still the case.

Taz,
thanks for that. I guess that means both the spare CCF ( badge 1) and the UK Police Search Team badge can go in my swops box then.
