Default Manchester regiment brass economy

Hi Gents,

Could you please give me your expert opinion on my rash purchase of this Manchester Regiment brass economy. I was under the impression that this was not manufactured and issued, but it is of really good quality with crisp detail and fitted with slider I look forward to your comments.

Thanks Colin.

Hello Colin
Not sure what you’ve got but as you say not one of the WW1 brass economy badges as the Manchester Regt wasn’t one of the regiments to have had this type of badge issued.

Just from the photographs, I think that is of quite recent manufacture and therefore spurious.

I can confirm from WO archives that Pattern 4586/1898 (Manchester Rgt) was still being made in two metals during the 1st WW.

Default Manchester economy

Hi Gents,

Just as I thought too good to be true another one in the fakes box, I must say thanks for your swift response as always.

Colin.

Colin,

Its all a learning curve. I bought one of these many years ago and believed the story that it was an Economy Issue cap badge.

As I collected more and researched more it became clear that in fact it wasnt and when I look at it now its obvious to me due to other manufacturing discrepancies such as font, style, size etc., but these are things that come with years of experience in handling and researching badges.

There are many more fantasy and fake Manchester Regiment badges out there particularly to the 1st, 2nd, 5th & 6th Volunteer Battalions.

regards

Hi Simon,

You are right as soon as you look a bit closer at this badge the slider and the font style do start to cause concerns, should have taken my time over buying this one. Not to worry this will not stop me from carrying on collecting and good to have weeded out another fantasy badge.

Thanks,

Colin.

https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...p?albumid=2871

This album shows examples of all of the authorised all brass economy less a couple of TF such as the 23rd Londons and Essex TF (the latter may have been also been authorised for wear by the Essex's 1918 Vol Bn)
