Default Brown Glosters badge

WW1 era FN BHam badge coloured brown. I did wonder if this in white metal underneath and it's stained brown?

It's not a TF badge nor an officers.

Any thoughts?

I thought at first of an all-brass simplified badge from WW1, but I didn't think that all-white-metal badges were ever made in brass, so all-in-all a bit puzzling.

Around the drill hole is showing white metal. I think its likely an enlisted man promoted and stained his badge.
