Very nice Mick, just picked one up myself. Has nice weight and the nickel plate gives it a swanky look.

It's one of my favourite badges.

What I'm trying to find out however, is what the regiment wore before this.

The unit was re-raised in 1949 but this badge was probably only issued around 1953 or 1954.

I have also seen a design showing this badge with a King's Crown but it was never manufactured.

I'm suspecting that they wore the Rising Sun badge prior to this being issued as other RAAC regiments (eg NSW Mounted Rifles) wore one at the same time (1948-1953).

Mick, would these armored type units have worn a silvered rising sun? There was some discussion on WRF regarding this and a few photos posted. Reason I ask is that I posted a silvered rising sun with that question asked over there.

Best

If I would have read down a bit further the answer was already posted. silvered rising sun on a black beret.

Hi Jack,

I'm not so sure about that mate.

The 1st Armoured Regiment wore a chrome Rising Sun badge yet other RAAC units (the 6th NSW Mounted Rifles springs to mind) wore a normal brass rising sun badge before they got their regimental badge.

Mick

ps

What is the WRF?

Mick, sorry for being so cryptic, WRF is the "war relics forum". they have an Aussie insignia thread running.

Smile QMI Badge

Mick
Both my Father & Uncle, plus myself, served in this unit( my first actually) and i remember amongst Uncle Lenny's (Len Petersen)stuff was a white metal rising sun , which his family put onto a plague for him when he finally left the service.

Cheers Bob (RACT)

Hi Bob,

Many thanks mate.

So I guess both 1AR and QMI wore the White Metal Rising Sun Badge during that period.

I don't suppose you have a picture of it being worn on a black beret by anyone in the unit?

Regards,

Mick

ps I also served in the unit.

G'day fellas, if you Google image seach 'prince of wales cup 1953' you'll find photos of QMI members being presented the cup whilst wearing what appears to be militia period hat badges on their berets...thoughts?

Very interesting indeed!

Worthy of some more research. I might see if the regimental museum curator has any more info about the insignia worn in early 1950s.

Mick

ps

I also have seen a proposed design for a King's Crown version of this (round QMI) badge - never manufactured however.
