Hi Holyboy, what’s the link to the 4th? Can’t remember and haven’t got records to hand, did they wear the Hertfordshire Regiment badge ??

On 04/08/1914 my great grandfather William Adams 1/5th Notts & Derby Regiment moved to Harpenden .Also at Harpenden were 1st/6th South Staffords from Burton on trent.....could it be possible that the photographer travelled with them/was in Harpenden at this time and the actual photograph is miscaptioned ?

I dont doubt for a minute that the cap badge is of the Hertfordshire regiment and i can find no reference from various online sources of them ever having been to Burton

I suppose we'll never know ! and thank you fror the quick responses

Ref the photo (which is actually a print of a print ),I found it totally by chance on fleabay along with two others that show what appears to be a butts party at the rifle range which is not far from the bottom of my garden.Seller is barrie161166 and listing title was ''Unknown army troop Burton on Trent Staffordshire''

Hi Magu,
Obviously the Herts lads would definitely of been in Harpenden, could of been some Herts Lads befriending the Notts & Derby / South Staffs lads and taken a picture with there kit and a name plaque ??? You never know might of been another picture of the Notts & Derby/ South Staffs lads taken with a Herts reference plaque done and swapped for a keep sake or the like?? Just a thought.

Isn't the "Reginald Bott" wording just a transparent panel adding the photographer's name to the print, rather than wording stencilled on a piece of kit?

I also wonder what the cryptic "I’ll 4th Herts Reg. " means.

I can not mean "4th Battailon, The Hertfordshire Regiment", because that never existed.

Oh, that is possible.
