3rd Toronto (Canadian) Milita
Hi Gents,
I'm looking for any assistance with narrowing down the date of this Canadian button. If it were British I would say it fell from around 1830's to 1855 due to it being a pre Tunic button (no rim). However I'm unsure as to whether or not this general rule applied to Canadian units? So an un-rimmed 3rd Toronto Militia - Date? Cheers, Roy

It is not listed in Smylies reference (but may be too early). The City of Toronto was organized in 1834. There was a No 3 Foot Artillery Company of Toronto circa 1862, and after 1869 a No 3 Company, both of which were companies of the 2nd Battalion Queen's Own Rifles.

Thanks Bill,
In the UK rimmed buttons were introduced around 1855, so your comment about the city being organized in 1834 would (I think) place this button between these days. I also have a '5th' to this town too. Thanks for that Bill, very helpful. Cheers, Roy

Roy, clarification. There was no organized Canadian militia until 1855. There were "unorganized" colonial companies prior, but there is no record of a 3rd that I have seen. The VR cypher was used until 1871, when replaced with VRI.
