Highland Light Infantry - 1910s-1920s
Hi,
here is a picture I have since a while already, from an unknown unit. Apparently showing men from a scottish cavalry unit, I would say in the years 1910s to 1920s. Completetely here outside of my usual themes, hence asking please for your help to try identifying this unit & time period. Worth to mention that this is the first time I see a pic with british soldiers wearing an apparently cut down tartan trouser, used as a short. Maybe the unit patch on the tropical helmet can help? Any information to help id this unit, time period (& place where possibly taken) most welcome. Thanks & Best Regards, Jean-Daniel Last edited by Lemataf; 04-08-20 at 06:17 PM. |

I believe they're infantry with bandolier equipment rather than cavalry (I have an idea they're Seaforths or HLI), they are wearing cut down trews which themselves may have been made from cast kilts at that time.
Edit: https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ighlight=Trews I think they may be HLI. https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ighlight=Trews Last edited by leigh kitchen; 04-08-20 at 04:30 PM. Reason: Auto correct likes trees not trees. |

Thanks Leigh for your reply.
I was on the idea that wearing this way cartridge bandolier was a british cavalry only practice. Cheers, Jean-Daniel |

PS: thank you too for the link provided to the other interesting post.
So Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment). Will have a look on the web for its history. Last edited by Lemataf; 04-08-20 at 03:19 PM. |

The bandolier equipment was introduced in 1903, superseded by the 1908 web equipment a few years later.
Some infantry in India continued to use of some parts of the equipment for some years and the bandolier was still in use by mounted troops until WWII. |

As mentioned, definitely HLI. This was their standard uniform in India. Probably 1st Bn. just before WW1. The always wore the tartan shorts until some time after the war, when they adopted the standard khaki Bombay bloomers like the rest.

Thank you grumpy & CB.
I tried to update this post title with HLI, but seems that something went wrong. Cheers, JD |

The Pioneers arm badge with bugle above is specific to Light Infantry or Rifles.
So, HLI or Scottish Rifles. regards

Pity they're not wearing hackles, 1 HLI wore green, 2 HLI white over red, would've pinned down which battalion, Cameronians wore black.
