Default To The Fallen

Coming up to the 100th anniversary of the end of hostilities of WWI many places are commemorating this event with fitting tributes. We travel through Walkington close to our home frequently and these characters are very striking when passing through. Each and every fallen soldier from this small village has a named personal silhouette standing proudly where they lived or very close by. Strange but they seem so lifelike they appear to be still with us, or is that just the memory? Bravo to the guys at Walkington and many other Cities, Towns and villages reminding us of the sacrifice previous generations have made for our freedom and rights. Let us not forget what they fought and gave the ultimate sacrifice for. I would like to think that i would do the same as they did all those years ago, but thanks to them and many like them i have not had to do this.

Two of us have written (in the nick of time) a booklet about the 39 men on our local church memorial - which will be presented next Sunday. In a few cases it was difficult to determine which was the right man. For some of the lads not long from school there was very little to say. BUT we have gathered photographs of all the graves and relevant memorial plaques - eg Thiepval..

They shall not be forgotten

This is ANZAC Square in Dunedin, New Zealand photo taken two weeks ago. Every cross is named and there are many more than this picture shows.
