WWII Defence Medal Ribbon & Unknown Ribbon With M.i.D. Emblem.
A ribbon bar of WWII Defence Medal ribbon and another ribbon on which a Mention in Despatches emblem is mounted.
The emblem may have had a bronzed or silver finish at one time, it may not have, it looks like it may have the remains of a gilt finish ( it seems unlikely that a post 1993 silver version of the emblem would be worn with a WWII ribbon. The ribbon that it is mounted on appears to be a very light green colour although it may be a cream colour or light grey or light blue, it's hard to tell. The ribbon is the same colour on the front and the back of the bar. Is the ribbon a medal ribbon proper or is it merely a neutral coloured backing on which to wear the MiD emblem, there having been no medal awarded for the campaign for which the MiD was earned? Has anybody any ideas please? |

Exactly that.

Just a suitable backing?
I know of the practice of and I've seen (or rather I've seen illustrations of) the emblems being worn on cloth backings to match the khaki, RAF blue etc tunic fabric but this confused me a bit as it has the appearance of a medal ribbon and I can't think of a likely medal with that ribbon. |

Hi Leigh
The emblems are worn on ribbon, not fabric, with the ribbon the colour of the uniform worn. See the attached pic. I expect your recipient picked the nearest colour ribbon he could find to match his uniform. If he was a civvie then he could have chosen any plain ribbon he had to hand. Dave |

It looks like somebody has used an old ribbon of the IYLSM, a sort of beige-yellow colour, or the pale greyish-blue one of the Militia LSM. Hard to tell really though.

Ta, I can't think of a suitable uniform colour, the closest I can get is RM Stone or civilian police light blue shirt, but the police don't wear ribbons on shirts (unless they're working foreign missions as part of a UK Police Contingent).
I'll file it as probable civilian. |
