Default Somerset mystery badge

I have been told this badge seems authentic but my initial belief that it was an authentic badge looks groundless. Any ideas?

Default Somerset badge

Thank you. I am going through my late father's badge collection - keeping some and selling others. I do not want to mislead potential buyers (which is what seems to have happened to my dad). I presume the fake Somerset badge has no value?

This badge is of a design that does not exist in any reference book that I can find nor is it recorded in the Somerset military Museum's collection in Taunton castle.

It is widely sold online by known fakers for £5-6.

Default Somerset badge

Cox’s book on military badges quotes this badge as Kings College in Taunton. I have this badge and it’s quality surpasses most other cap badges l have seen, so does this badge exist as a school badge or is someone making badges for no good reason?

I know absolutely nothing about this particular badge, but to answer the last part of your post, the answer is an affirmative YES.

To defraud, trick con, scam, cheat, dupe, swindle, hoodwink diddle, rip off and several other words, in order to make money from unsuspecting buyers.

Regards.

Cox.s book is full of flaws. I have ben to King's and seen the photos of the cadet corps and OTC and that badge is not there. Sorry but Cox's book is not a good source.

My experience of Victorian/Edwardian SLI badges is that the lugs were positioned vertically. The side by side fixing on the scroll would make the badge more vulnerable to bending and even breaking as well as not sitting that well on the cap.

Without trying to be pedantic, I'd like to point out the 1st VB badge actually has the loops running diagonally.

On the badge in question it's often referred to as as for the Militia. It's possibly but in the Gaunt stuff chucked out by the NAM was a bag of bronze bugles with the mouthpiece to the left but no upper Jellalabad scroll. I would hardly think the manufacturer would go to the trouble of making a two piece badge where versions worn by the regulars and volunteers always appeared as a single stamp.

So if the Militia did wear a badge is was very possibly this with the OR's wearing something similar to Churchill's Fig 405/6.

Keith

Good point about the 1VB. I have seen some worn on side caps so wonder if that is why they were diagonal?

And the 2VB had them lower down
