The right side does look as though it has been cut, (shorter cloth than the left) but, no mudguard border.

Could they be for 'Royal Aircraft Factory'? Employees/personnel wore a button with 'R.A.F.' abbreviations

Gents,

Thanks for your thoughts. They are definitely not cut down Regiment titles.

Back scans shortly.

I've seen these a number of times over the years and never got a positive I'D. I'm not certain they are Royal Air Force.

Thanks for that.

I am inclined to agree but that leaves us with the question What are They?

To me they still look as though they are cut from something.

Royal Aircraft Factory is plausible, something like security guard, as they have their own initialled buttons too.

Default RAF Titles and Royal Aircraft Factory buttons

Hello All,

I too have a pair of RAF titles that are not too dissimilar to the ones posted, I'm struggling to upload the photo of them at the moment. Hope to be able to add them over the weekend. In the meantime can I ask if anyone has a photo of Royal Aircraft Factory buttons being worn and or contemporary references / descriptions for them?

If you mean the small brass buttons with the letters 'R.A.F.' they are RAF mess waiters buttons, introduced in 1921.

I've been bursting to say this one, so will air it and depart:

They look like someone started making some R.A.E.C. shoulder titles and gave up three quarters of the way through.

As per the black on khaki slip-on R.E.M.L. The black thread ran out! Mike
