After studying the backs it does look as though the bottom of the letter E has been unpicked, and the letter C unpicked before being cut off.

This is interesting. Ive seen several of these but never noticed if they have ben unpicked (I don't have any in my collection). Brass 'RAF' titles also exist.

As to the 'R.A.F.' buttons that were mentioned earlier, they were introduced in 1921 under Air Ministry Order 416/21. Further details:

Mess Butler:
Day wear: Dark blue lounge suit of civilian pattern.
Evening Wear: Dark blue evening suit, civilian model: coat and waistcoat to be fitted with brass buttons with raised initials "R.A.F."

Mess Waiter:
Day Wear: Blue and white striped jean jacket, lounge jacket model and blue and white striped jean waistcoat both with brass buttons with raised initials "R.A.F."
Evening Wear: Dark blue evening coat and trousers (civilian model); blue and white waistcoat (as for day wear): coat and waistcoat to be fitted with brass buttons with raised initials "R.A.F."

Is there any connection at all to the Royal Aircraft Factory, as that was a previous identification?
