R.N.A.S. or F.A.A. cloth eagle?
After much searching through old threads I cannot work out who would have worn this eagle. Can anyone please enlighten me?
I think that it might be Royal Naval rather than Royal Air Force as it came with this Petty Officer's hat badge. Last edited by High Wood; 28-06-21 at 10:07 PM. |

Thank you for the informative upload which confirms that the R.N.A.S. wore a red eagle. I would be delighted if this was definitely was a R.N.A.S. cloth badge but I am wondering if the F.A.A. wore a similar eagle.
I am also wondering if there is any significance in the shape of the badge. Simon. |

Thank you again. I did see the second link that you posted last night. Information about what the F.A.A. wore seems to be in shorter supply, but I would imagine that they must have worn an eagle of some description. |

Use of the eagle badges by the RNAS ceased after absorbtion into the RAF. The eagle became the shoulder badges of the new service, red on khaki for the khaki uniforms and light blue on black for blue uniforms. As the eagle was well established as a RAF badge the use of such an emblem on RN uniform of the 1930s FAA would have been frowned on by the Sea Lords. The shape of your badge has no meaning. It was very common for ratings to trim these badges. The Fleet Air Arm seems to have adopted the two bladed and four bladed airscrews as their Branch emblem for ratings. All other badges were standard RN issues.

"Still" in use, given that the FAA had only just been formed as a branch of the RAF and that neither the RNAS or the RAF ever wore an Albatross, I do not see how it could be?
Air Force Order 2793 in your link refers to this badge, it's wings only being those of an Albatross. Quote:

My mistake , I need to check what I've written before actually posting. I was just trying to show that the three groups originally had 'wings' based on different birds. .

Air Force Order 2793 is incorrect. The AFO stands for Admiralty Fleet Order 2793.

The only mention of Albatross was in relation to the FAA. .

In my opinion the eagle is a good RNAS which I am assuming has a nice sack cloth period backing. The PO badge was of course not unique to the RNAS.
