Suffolk Two Tower KC Badge.
Hi All.
Although I have started to look at the Albums, I hadn't got as far as Alan O's infantry badge variation album. This, however, has now come to my attention due to a recent post about unvoided Suffolk badges. The first thing in this album that caught my eye was a two tower KC variation, because, I knew that I had seen one of those, somewhere. I found it, surprisingly, very quickly, I have attached a couple of pictures, is this the badge? and would it be considered a rare item? I ask because the seller is wanting quite a lot for it, and after my recent pagri badge disaster, I don't want to be dropping any more financial clangers.

Well it's £70 more than mine cost so I would avoid paying well over the odds. The seller is asking an awful lot and an amount comparable to what a rare VB Suffolk would cost: and that is why it has not sold.

Many thanks, Alan, I did think it might be a bit steep, however, there are encouraging noises about 4th Bn looped badges, so all is not lost.

Two tower Suffolk
The badge looks to me to be a good one, but as Alan says over the top price wise, with badge collecting I have found patience is a real virtue to have.
These two tower king's crown Suffolk badges are fairly scarce, but were issued up to and during the Great War, so unless you have deep pockets wait and find a more reasonably priced badge. Rob

I'm sure that I was looking at that badge, Alan, I was put off because it looked, to me, as if it had been drilled, top and bottom, either side of the central tower

Hello all I have been reading this thread with interest and although posting is not my thing the comment that twin tower kings crown suffolk badges should not have the laurel ends below the scroll. I put forward this badge for your comment. If I can get it upload.

I am not able to use the link to your comments I have lockdales sept 2019 catalogue and it does appear to be the same badge but the realised auction prices in the next show it was not sold. Which would account for how I bought it in a large mixed lot for not much.

Regarding the badge with the added turret, this is the badge I was looking at, to me, at least, it looks as if it's been drilled, top and bottom, either side of the central turret, That's perhaps, just how they were made, but it does look a bit strange to me. The one in your album does not look anything like this, Alan, it has a nice, clean, well defined slot, either side of the centre turret.

The Lockdales' one is indeed a forgery.
My personal opinion is that these were not a sealed pattern but a re-use of old dies that were re-cut in 1915 to meet the sudden demand for cap badges. Whether these were produced by sub-contractors or possibly for sake in canteens I am not sure. They are not that well made or finished which suggests that they were not made by the established firms. https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...hp?albumid=396 this album contains some of the other regiments' badges who bear similar traits.

The picture below confirms the cut and shut never mind only a tenner, as for the recut twin tower in the same lot item two I have never been a fan of it, but it appears to be twin to the one in the last post , the third badge also in the same lot I have seen reported as 4th battalion but I am dubious. The second badge is probably OK just badly made.
The third one is missing the Gibraltar and was attributed to be a 3rd Battalion Militia badge - however I was not aware of anything other than a Bronze version before and it may have been meddled with,

Perhaps the badge was returned as when I checked the-saleroom.com on sale day it was shown as sold and hammered at +£100. Regardless, I’m glad it didn’t cost you much.
In my belief the 2 tower badges sans wreath ends are a WW1 manufacturers error which was then rectified with the bodge job addition of a central tower. Interestingly this type is found in a few voiding variations both with and without braze holes, inc. solid crown, unvoided towers, voided towers & crown. I’ve attached a couple examples I had to hand sat on the table, personally I’ve never paid more than a tenner for one, often less.
