I think it could just be a lightly oxidised version.

8th NSW Infantry Rgt Irish Rifles
Hi Guys. I recently found this badge fastened to a dirty old piece of Polystyrene along with a few Russian ‘Tinnies’ at a car boot sale. I had no idea what it is was only that it had a Shamrock on the front so it had to be ‘Irish’ It is also very dirty! No I'm not going to clean it!
After spending a few days looking on as many sites as I could find all over Ireland I gave up. A few days later a look in Australia’s on line “Digger History” I found a couple of articles on the 8th NSW Infantry Rgt. Irish Rifles (1899-1903) Well what do you know, a lucky find, my badge is Australian and not Irish. I believe the articles were written by a member of this forum, Slick Mick, so thanks for writing that. I have now checked out a couple of other sites on the net but they are a bit vague so when in doubt head for the badge forum. I have a couple of questions regarding this badge. 1. Is it okay? 2. Mick mentions ‘two types’ of Victorian hat Badge which ones mine? 3. What is the significance of drilling a hole through the top of the number eight? No mine hasn’t got one but I found it mentioned a couple of times 4. Is there a site which can provide more information on this particular badge, Rgt? 5. I guess this can be considered a fairly scarce item 6. Ball park Value? 7. Possibility some of these guys went to SA during the Boer War? In appreciation Thanks Roy. |

Hi Roy,
Its not a NSW Irish Rifles hat badge It's actually the 8th (Union Volunteer) NSW Infantry Regiment (Irish Rifles) that existed from 1st July 1899 to 1st July, 1903. Formerly part of the 5th (Union Volunteer) NSW Infantry Regiment, it was compromised of 4 companies and a HQ and was formed in Sydney in 1899. A company was formed in Bulli in January 1900 and another company was formed at Newcastle in September 1900. The badge looks good and it's quite a scarce badge. You don't see many around. It's possible that some of the soldiers may have went to the Boer War but that would only have occurred if they went with another unit such as the NSW Lancers. The Australian Boer War contingents were mostly mounted units. Mick

Hi Roy
As Mick said and it does look good. Well done mate. There are copies of this badge but the ones I've seen are thick cast heavy led badges painted black. Again great find BC. |

NSW IRISH
Mick is correct they did not serve in the Boer War as a unit, but 23 men served in the war, and the Battle Honour South Africa 1901 was awarded to the NSW Irish this was later changed to South Africa 1901-02.

Thanks
Thanks guys your quick replies tidied everything up nicely. Just goes to show making the effort of getting out of bed early in the morning to attend a flea market can pay off big time. Thanks again Roy.
