A/A Variant Badges Of The Q.D.G
Howard,
Terrific pics of the arm badges,just to continue the theme of Q.D.G badges I thought I'd post a few variant A/A badges for the staybrite collectors out there. P. Taylors book "collecting anodised badges" states that there are 3 versions of the Q.D.G badge.I believe the 3 badges posted below could be the ones he's writing about. 1. unvoided between the eagles head. (firmin) 2. voided between the eagles head. (firmin) 3. differing wing pattern with sword further on the left of the badge also no pattern on centre of shield (J.RGaunt B'ham)

My Lot
Hi guys, i need educating here as i know absolutely nothing about 'staybright' badges..... What is the difference between chromed and anodised and silvered etc etc, they are all staybright to this uneducated fool.... and what exactly constitutes a 'staybright' nomenclature....
Anyway these are the 'staybrights' i have ...please correct me if needed... 1. KDG Dowler - Quite a matt appearance, deep chromed and of a high quality. Quite a chunky looking bird with wide central crown. This was the first 'staybright' badge issued to KDG but they never wore it as they only wore the WM badge bought at the PRI and then polished. 2. QDG Gaunt - Bright almost silver in appearance. Quite slim in comparison to the Dowler bird. Solid cast rear of badge, and gap beneath crown is un-voided. 3. QDG Firmin - Looks to be from the same cast as the Dowler bird as appearance is quite broad and has same crown. Not so shiny as Gaunt bird. Short and broad slider. 4. QDG London badge & Button Co - Similar in shape to the Gaunt model but not exactly. Sword to the end of the wing with central portion of shield unmarked (no dots). Small orb and the rear of the badge is cast solid. 5. QDG London badge & Button Co - Same again, similar in shape to the Gaunt model but not exactly. Sword to the end of the wing with central portion of shield unmarked (no dots). Small orb and the rear of the badge is pressed. Howard

Hi Howard, I have a 1943 KDG hallmarked collar badge with pin fixing, could this be the badge for Sgts of special merit?

Actual Certificate
There you go boyos.... the real McCoy.....
It was a HM silver 1938 patt collar.; but they were not specifically produced to be presented as a Merit Badge. They were made as Officers Collar Badges and used in a secondary fashion in 1943 by the then CO who had the bright idea of presenting outstanding SNCO Tp Ldr's with the Merit Badge. Therfore, unless you have some additional provenance such as the certificate and or a letter of authentication, it can only be assumed as a collar badge and therefore representative of the Merit badge.... No appologies for being pedantic because if we dont lay the law down now..... every man and his dog will be the proud owners of the Merit badge when the actual number presented was in single figures...... I wish i could tell you that this little beauty was mine but sadly its not.... Pics taken in Regt'l museum archive room....... Howard

Hi, with reference to the 37 GM badge from your reply I get the impression it wasn't worn. Is that right. Also I have both versions and they are different dies, do you know why and really pushing my luck, why lugs and slider?

Hi, sorry yes. I,m new and thought everybody could mind-read,and yes I stand corrected 1938 GM. Thanks for all the information. It's really good to hear from someone who knows what theyr'e talking about. I've enjoyed reading this thread.
