Default County Regiments

Sean (Sapper)’s thread on a Buckinghamshire badge made me think about my boyhood badge collection which I started in the ?mid 1960s. I was advised to collect the (OR) cap badges of the infantry county regiments as they were in 1914 (cavalry badges were far too expensive to me anyway).

Many years later I added the badges of the TA (minor county) regiments (Monmouth, Cambs, Herts, Hereford and Huntingdon) – and I recently managed to get a Rutland badge which I’m calling a Rut Vol Regt (1stBn) as described here on the Forum.

It appears that the Scottish, Irish and Welsh regiments (though Monmouthshire is a border case !) had ‘recruiting areas’ rather than ‘counties’ and I found such a list a few years ago.
