The blackening could have been done when there was a shortage of officers OSD badges. I have no explanation for the filling of the crown voids and look forward to your image.

Rgds, Thomas.

In the meantime, can anybody kindly provide a comprehensive list of Gun badge Sealed Patterns? I believe even official modifications such as reinforcement merited separate SPs?
The only information I have is as referred to in K&K

Thanks

I don't think that they have been put there after to block up the voids in the crown but that the punch set up was wrong on this badge and perhaps a couple of others in that the slug hasn't been pushed through enough to shear off properly and fall out.

I agree, a poor stamping.

Magpie, Simon. I respect your theory but I don't necessarily agree with it. Could be, could be not.

I doubt that this badge was manufactured on its own, so during mass production of badges surely there would be any number of 'flawed' sister badges on the production run. What I'm trying to say is if the press wasn't operating properly then the result would be the same for hundreds, if not thousands, of badges. This is the only badge specimen with this 'flaw' (if it is a flaw) I have ever come across. Moreover, the slugs are of different size whereas the voids are symmetrical. I also read somewhere that quality control would discard any imperfect strikes.

Are there any further thoughts on the blackening and if it would be connected in any way with the closed voids?

Hi All,
I've been googling for info on "gun badges" and I thought that this old forum post that I came across, ought to see the light of day, again, lots of goodies shown here, especially Antipodean stuff!
