Default Royal Ulster Rifles 1st Glider Battalion Badge

I was out at a car boot this morning and bought a tin load of sewing kit and buttons. There were alsorts of bits and bobs in it, so as they only asked a £1.00 for the tin I just bought it to sort out later.
When I emptied out the contents I found a Royal Ulster Rifles Cap Badge. I believe this design is the 1st Glider Battalion.
What I'm unsure about is the fact that it's made of Sterling Silver.
Does anyone know the significance of it being Silver ? Would this be Officers ?. There's no makers name, just Sterling Silver.
Any Ideas would be appreciated

Robbo

this has been discussed many times here on the forum, the badge was for officers and senior NCOs. It is an unofficial regimental pattern. See the link below for further details.

Thanks John
A very interesting thread. As I wasn't buying a badge, or for that matter, being sold one, The matter of Fake or not did'nt arise. However, after reading all the various articles the question obviously must arise. It would now be comforting to know if the badge is genuine ?
Due to the source I'd have no reason to suspect it was fake.

Well done Robbo, you lucky devil, this is a 200+ badge well worth the 1 investment, it is not glider but 1st RUR air landing battalion, they were in Normandy 1944. Indeed this was worn by officers and NCOs. There are white metal versions that are all presumed fakes. These finds make collecting worthwhile
