RAF Nursing Service 1918
This must be an unusual photo of a member of this predecessor of the PMRAFNS which was formed in June 1918 and had just 130 members by 1919. It was taken by a photographer in Ipswich.
In their unpublished work on RAF Insignia Margaret Nobbs and Charles Thomas note that AMWO Order 760 issued in late 1920 ordered that "The RAF Nursing Service metal badge and the black mohair bow in front of the hat" be abolished but they had never identified the badge mentioned. The nurse in the photo has badges on the hat (a little obscured), on the collar and at her throat all of which have the outstretched eagle with what appears to be a scroll underneath. Could this be one of the long-unidentified metal eagle badges? All thoughts welcome. Jon |

Great photo and great evidence of the early RAFNS badge been worn. It appears from the photo that there is a cap badge size as well as collar badge size. I was always under the impression that only collar badges existed.
I have seen an example of one of the badges on a website dealing with RAF and there insignia a few years back. I cannot seem to find the site again, so it may be down. Once again, great find. I would love to find a set of the badges for my Medical / Nursing collection. Steven |

Thanks for the links. The badge, clearly that worn in the photo, is one I have never seen before.

I have one of these badges but as it is only a single, I don't know if it is a cap or collar badge!! Would it be possible to let me know the dimensions of your cap badge version???
