Default Officer Service Dress Cap Badges

Can anyone add to the following and or correct the following:

- OSD badges came out in circa 1902 or circa 1908?

- OSD badges were removed from official service in circa 1947?

Any reference to Army Regulation Orders concerning this matter?

Thanks in advance,

Drew

Hello Drew, 1902 - 1947 officially as far as I’m aware, and worn after unofficially for a while I believe by some officers.

(A.O.) 8/1902 & (A.O.) 54/1947

Gerard

They are all at TNA but I don't know how many they have digitised.

I have yet to find a single, comprehensive source of Army Orders online.

The Monthly Army List (of which there are dozens of editions available free via Google free e-books) does contain Army Orders.

It can be tedious to search unless you know the year and month (or at least can approximate the month) of issue of the Army Orders you are interested in. It will be hit and miss that the Army List for period you are interested in will have been digitized. A screenshot below of what to expect from The Monthly List of May 1885

As KLR mentions the NA in Kew holds a (near) full set, when I was last there the volume for the year/month that I was interested in had gone missing but I note that you appear to be in the US hence Kew may not be a good option for you.

What you can probably find on the internet is the series of Dress Regulations (for officers). If you find the 1904 edition you will find in the list per regiment the various insignia including, for the first time, the OSD (if you after a specific regt).
