Default Unusual skill/trade badge

Hi, I bumped into an old work mate on the recent Armed Forces day and he had a mate with him who was a Sapper "terrier" in uniform.
He had a rather unusual skill/trade badge on his arm .
It looks like a blue roman numeral '1' with laurel leaves (very roman)
Can anybody identify this badge?

The clue is , the three of us are residents of Swindon (a railway tiown)

Default Unusual Trade Badge

Is'nt that the "RAILWAYMAN RE" trade badge?? Surely ALL railway matters went over to the R.C.T. on formation back in 1965(?) from the R.E. Unless someone knows the answer. Could he still be wearing his trade badge now??

Nice to see that badge being worn 'in anger' so to speak.

Default answer

Your more or less all correct. It's not a (Roman) 1 but a section of railway line. Not sure of the correct skill but from what I gathered the wearer is a bit of a dab hand at track laying and maintainance.
I think he said the driving of the actual engines is the work of R.C.T.
The things they get up to nowadays.

I hope the Warrant Officer concerned doesn't think that the RCT drive the trains - as the Royal Corps of Transport passed (marched? drove?) into history in 1993 when the Royal Logisitics Corps was founded.. Unless they're ghost trains at Longmoor..

Is there a particular reason why these are being manufactured in the pre-1960 format/size?

Paul

Have yours come from an army source or the manufacturer?
