What have we here? No 5.
Again, an interesting LAC photo showing some unusual insignia detail. The photo may also be linked to a significant change in insignia for the regiment in question. Observations welcome.

Well Bill, the corporal on the left is wearing a "Strathcona's" shoulder title (first patt,I guess) also, he is wearing the 5th CAD patch wich is missing the "d" in the LSH title. How am I doing so far?

This is the visit to 5 CAD in which the King pointed out that the abbreviation for "Lord" was "Ld" and not "L" as was shown on the patches. By the following morning the CO of the LdSH was wearing a pair of correct patches - cobbled together overnighty by one of his staff.

Id positive...
Clive has identified the event when compared with the LAC credit. The LdSH 5th Div patch came out of this inspection, as indicated.

Location: Aldershot, England, Date: April 24, 1942 Photographer: Audrain, Lieut. Laurie A., Photographer Mikan Number: 3534710 Jo, I believe you are correct in the id of the shoulder title. Other research indicates that the first coloured embroidered shoulder title was the single line STRATHCONA'S. Phil, all ranks wore this pattern for a period of time circa 1942. (I believe, but stand to be corrected, that the single line coloured embroidered shoulder title to be worn by the officers is a late war or post war practice.)

I am trying to determine which would have been the patch worn by the Strathcona's during the Italian Campaign.

I saw the date of the LAC photo, but was unsure if this was in fact "the" visit in question where the King pointed out the correct abbreviation for "Lord". I have located a 5 CAD LdSH patch, but wanted to make sure it was the one worn during most of the Strathcona's action in Italy before picking it up. Thanks for confirming! Craig

Another point not noted previously..........the Brigadier is wearing a brigade bar over the divisional patch something not often seen in period photographs.
