Default Amang Dursel's United - In Defence?

Picked this up out of curiosity more than anything else, does anyone have any idea what it is "Amang Dursel" is a nil return on Google? The badge itself is a thin gilt metal, very deeply struck and well made! Crossed rifles surmounted by a Victorian crown, with a central thistle and flanked by a wreath of half thistles and half roses(?). Measures 55 x 45mm.

Hi Andy,

I see that Wallis & Wallis in 2000 (lot 638 - sorry it doesn’t show a month) sold the following:

“Lot 638: 4 glengarry badges: blackened Vic and KC Queen's Edinburgh RVB, WM Thistle Star (stated to be Linlithgow RV), and WM crowned thistle and Union wreath on crossed rifles with motto scrolls "In Defence" and "Amang Oursels United" (some repairs) GC”.

I did another quick google search and came up with this about Robbie Burns

“….These incidents led to an Excise inquiry into Burns loyalty to the British state which threatened to cost him his job, so he displayed his apparent British loyalty by joining the Royal Dumfries Volunteers and wrote a song for them. It included the lines that have allowed certain people to claim that Burns was a supporter of Union with England.

"Be Britain still to Britain true,
Amang oursels united;
For never but by British hands
Must Britain's wrongs be righted…

So it could be a Glengarry for the Royal Dumfries Volunteers!!

All the best

Ian

Default AMANG OURSEL’S UNITED

I have recently acquired a plaid brooch with a, to me, unidentified badge on. On examining it it is identical to the original post in this thread. Did it’s identity ever get confirmed? Royal Dumfries Volunteers? Is the plaid genuine? It certainly seemed to have a lot of age to it, but has since been washed in warm water with a toothbrush.
Apologies for the computer refusing to show pictures right way up.
Grateful for any further info,

IanH
