Royal Regiment of Fusiliers - badge 'backing' piece
This Royal Regiment of Fusiliers anodised cap badge came with an interesting backing piece possibly worn as a stiffener inside the beret?
The backing piece is made from reddish brown compressed fibre board similar to that used for identity discs during WW2. The three holes seem 'factory' made and the piece is possibly originally insulation from electrical equipment. It is stained and salty and looks to have been worn. Tim

Tim I have a similar backing on an Air Training Corps badge, think it was to shape the beret behind the badge.

It would probably hold the hackle better and more vertically too.

I wore a RRF badge with such a backing for a while during the early 1970's, the backing having been left in a locker previously used by a Royal Welch Fusilier.
I have a RRF badge with one of those backings, both in unworn condition in my collection and two or three berets to different regiments including to a Coldstream Guards WO with the backings fitted. |

We were issued with a grey version of this backing, between 1991-1995ish. We cut them to roughly the same size as our grenades. Andy

I had one of these - or something like it - as an RRF cadet in the second half of the 1970s.

Thanks for reviving my post. In 60 years of collecting and 32 years serving I have now only seen two of these fibre backing pieces!

I have another which I bought complete with RRF badge and possibly one fitted to another Coldstream WO's beret.
The one I picked up in 'Derry bit the dust when my beret was nicked by a mate and the backing was snapped in half and thrown in a bin (revenge was exacted). |
