St Edwards Crown RAF Officers Bronzed Beret Badge.
I have a question about a badge sold on eBay a couple of days ago.
Unfortunately I havn't a link to the entry. It was what appeared to be a RAF officers metal St Edward's Crown beret badge but instead of being gilded it appeared to be bronzed, as stated by the seller, and was of one piece and without any cloth insert. It was stated to be complete and undamaged but had piercings in the crown that would take wire fittings from a metal overlay with sandwiched fabric. It sold for over £103. I wasn't interested in buying the badge and I assumed it wasn't genuine but someone's paid a lot of money for what I take to be an incomplete wrong finish (or "dirty") but otherwise common badge. Could a RAFicianado tell me if I'm missing something here please? |

Found the link
"Unusual Post 1953 Royal Air Force RAF Officers Beret Badge - Bronze?" ".........an unusual example of the post 1953 officers beret badge. The metal looks to be more like bronze on both back and front (as opposed to dirty brass) and there doesn't ever seem to have been any velvet or other backing to the crown, nor to the badge itself. It has two lugs to the reverse, higher than most I have seen. Very good condition with little if any wear." 264817380205 |

Ta - I should've come out of the app and sorted a link.

Judging by the holes in the crown band, I would suggest this is just an unfinished badge with the holes for attachment of the silver coloured "Ermine" band (as seen on the standard badges) and the brass plate to hold the crowns cushion.

I agree with Dave. Looks unfinished to me.

Indeed it does, it looks like a "normal" unfinished badge, just a strange finish - I assume that OSD versions of the badge have never existed so what's the game with the £103 that someone has allegedly coughed up for it I wonder?
