Two of my BW hackles, one came in the tin with the label stating it's a Great War period item, the other was a seperate purchase.
Both hackles have a feathered section of about 2 1/2" The hackle with the button - an officer's quality button which is wired on to the hackle and obviously not intended to be easily removed. Last edited by leigh kitchen; 29-09-18 at 03:12 PM. Reason: Additional images and detail added. |

Leigh.
On the left hackle from a foreign service helmet, feathers 2 inches high date unknown. On the right hackle worn in the T-O-S feathers 2 1/2 inches high came from a 2nd Bn man who transfered to 1st Bn in 1948. |

Both of my hackles are small - l'll get the measure out.
Additional images and measurements added to post no. 21. The feather section of this hackle is about 3 1/2" long. The paper tube is fashioned from paper folded and glued and bearing in black print "Letter of Guarantee, Bank of Baroda, Ltd. Calcutta". Last edited by leigh kitchen; 29-09-18 at 03:27 PM. Another hackle, feathered section about 3 1/2" long (bearing in mind it's stored in a narrow tube and so could lose some length when bushed out).
I'm assuming that the other three hackles I've posted have "age" to them as this one may. I could be wrong. |

An Army Air Corps beret "badged" to the Black Watch.
The beret is a "KANGOL" with Imperial size stamp and no other markings. There is a semi circular badge stiffener behind the government pattern tartan patch, manufactured within the beret between the outer and the liner. The tartan patch has an opening at the top, in the centre. The rim is of black plastic. When I got the beret it didn't have the hackle, which I've added for the photos (feathered section of the hackle is 3 1/2" long.). Given the Imperial sizing and plastic rim I'm guessing that the beret dates from c 1970 - early 80's? |

Scarce 4/5 BW titles worn 1921-39. Much harder to find than 6/7 version.
Both have hex lugs and no serifs on the Ts so I assume Tiptaft manufacture, shame about colour variation. |

Leigh, I should add that I dont believe Captain Fortune wore a tartan flash on his beret and the hackle would have been the traditional 'bloom' shape of the C20th rather than the narrower, vertical plume shape currently worn by the Black Watch.
