My understanding is that, yes, the slip-ons were first worn in Burma - easy to take off when in a combat situation and, as a bonus, made the tunics easier to launder too. The ladies I know who portray WWI nurses
always complain about having to remove all the insignia and all the buttons to launder their uniforms. The Army, oddly, adopted this sensible plan and went over to slip-ons.
