Default Musketry skill at arms

A variety that is new to me. I would be interested to learn when it was worn and by whom. It should be more common if it was a standard British musketry badge.
Thanks.

Default Crossed Rifles

Edwards and Langley, in their Book, “British Army Proficiency Badges” Have it shown at figure 23C. A prize badge for “Best shot of Sgts and L/Sgts of a Regiment or Battalion (later included Warrant Officers) A bullion type was introduced during the Boer War as was a Cloth type later, possibly 1904. Sketchy details but they say it “Disappeared” before WW11. Worn on lower left arm.

"23c" is different to the badge shown in post no.1, the wreath being in a vertical oval - perhaps the badge in question is locally made to represent 23c or of later manufacture made to deceive?
Or a genuine variation?

Both points taken Gentlemen. My assumption is that badge in post (1) is possibly of later manufacture (between Wars?) and that it would be of the size approximate to the GM proficiency badges of that era. In E & G’s book, they also state evidence of it being worn as late as 1967. My thoughts on that would be that if it were photographic evidence, it may be difficult to distinguish 23C from the badge in post (1). Regards, David J.

To prove my point, here is a rare version of the Best Shot Sergeants in Battalion badge of mine in Gilding Metal similar in construction to the one in this thread.

Note the large size.

I suspect the one shown may be a lot smaller and I tend to think its a collar badge or similar.

regards

Mark,

Badges of that size which are Prize badges are rare in metal.

The standard type is one piece but this is a well made two piece badge, probably made overseas, pre WW1 period.

+++ Always looking to buy all vrsions of the crossed rifles in wreath badges, with Crowns or Stars in Cloth, Metal and Bullion.+++
