Default Gaunt Pattern Books

Was reading through Churchills "History of the British Army infantry collar badge" and in it he states "The Gaunt pattern books show the intended design for officers". I wonder if he owns or has access to these Gaunt pattern books. These books could shed some serious light on what original badges "Should" look like. Especially if they contain pictures of Gaunt produced badges.

It is indeed frustrating that Churchill does not give any proper references.
Nevertheless, there are Gaunts archives in London and in Birmingham.
Otherwise the ACD records often have illustrations - or descriptions - of OR (collar) badges.

If anyone knows of other maker's records, I'd love to know.

hi michael,
i had one of these many many tears ago and sold it (stupid me)
it had good quality plates of various badges gaunt made. my volume was dated around the 1930s. was about A4 size and had about 15-20 plates of various badges sorted into british cav, british inf, etc along with a few collonial pages. no way near a complete selection of badges but a fantastic reference. i have seen one for sale in aus a few years ago and the dealer wanted several hundred dollars

For those with a few dollars to spare...

AbeBooks has a J.R. Gaunt Book...

Badges, Buttons, Medals, Swords etc.

Is it the same... just twice cheaper?

Hobson & Sons... another catalogue.

Hmmmm, and all I wanted was a decent library to study in.
I collect badges, not books about them - I go to libraries for those !
I think the Gaunt one mentioned is one that I've seen in Birmingham,

Default National army museum

I do know that the National Army Museum has the full works as regards Guants I do not know if they let the general public have access to it mind But they do give a list and photographs online to any paticular Regiment or Corps.

To access the originals at the NAM London, you have to apply in advance for a readers ticket. Well worth it, as you get access to their reading room.
You could spend a month in there.
