Ian ,
Welcome to the Forum, I dont see any problem with you adding what further information you have on this most mysterious button ,it may help positive identification of the unit. There is a list of button makers in one of the MHS Bulletins with the dates they were in existance I will try to find it ,it may give a fairly precise time span in which the button could have been made. P.B.

Ian,
As Peter says I do not see any conflict of interest in you commenting on your button and welcome to the Forum. Alan |

An amazing thing, immediately after my last post, I found the list of button makers in the first Bulletin I looked in, in fact the book opened at the page in question.
Bulletin No 110, November 1977, article "Button Makers " ( details of research carried out by William Tate of Southend June 1977) Nothing listed for Hawkes ( who I presume became Gieves and Hawkes ). I wonder if, like in the case of some swords you find with the retailers name and not the manufacturers name ,Hawkes were retailers who had buttons made by others but marked with their own details ? Another dead end ! P.B.

Thanks for the welcome guys - much appreciated.
The back-mark issue has got me thinking. I have just checked my various lists of backmarks etc. In the list of Button Manufacturers in the back of "Discovering British Military Badges and buttons" by R.J. Wilkinson-Latham. It lists various back-marks for the manufacturer "Hawkes", and shows : "Hawkes & Co., 14 Piccadilly," as 1853 - 1890. Not sure how accurate his information is. Anyway hope that helps in some small way! Ian |

The list in the MHS Bulletin appears to be mainly based on information from "Pigot and Co`s Royal National Commercial and Steet Directory" London 1840 and is presumably those businesses described as button manufacturers.
Still makes me wonder if Hawkes might have been retailers and not maufacturers but the dates 1853-1890 seem to fit the bill. ( I have a copy of Discovering British MIlitary Badges and Buttons but had forgotted the list of badge and button makers in the book , the book was first published in 1973 so the writer of the MHS article was beaten to it by a few years .I see the first date for Thomas Hawkes is 1788) P.B.
