It is a 7th Territorial Bn badge becasue it is a one piece all white metal badge. likewise the 5th Battalion was all blackened brass. The 2 territorial battalion badges originated in pre 1908 Volunteer Battalions who had their own distinctive badges and they followed suit.

White metal Kings badge
The post 1926 all white metal Kings cap badge was also worn by The Liverpool Institute OTC (Badges of the OTC byErnest J Martin )
There is a booklet " Insignia of the Kings Liverpool Regiment-Volunteers and Territorials" which shows some of the variations worn by the different volunteer and territorial battalions P.B. |

Gaylor's book also says LUOTC and the 9th Bn. Is this correct? All the LUOTC I have seen are bimetal. Was he getting mixed up with LIOTC?

liverpool University OTC
Alan,
I am afraid you cannot take everything Gaylor said at face value, he often used articles in the MHS Bulletin as sources and these often contained inaccuracies. I have no evidence that the Liverpool University OTC ever wore all white metal badges, they still wear bi metal Kings liverpool badges and had at one time the scarce "large" post 1926 Kings badge in anodised, which I understand was made for them under private arrangements. In the 1938 article on Badges of the OTC in the Journal for Army Historical Research, it says the cap badge and button of the Kings Regt ( Liverpool) are worn Most books say the 7th and 9th Kings wore the all white metal pre 1926 badge, but I am now having doubts that that applied to the 9th Kings. In the Territoral Year book 1909 it says they wore the badge of the line regiment and they wore khaki as walking out dress. ( The all white metal badge also worn as other ranks sporran badge by Lpool Scottish ) Julian ( 16 KLR ) is researching the Territorial Association records and might be prepared to add his own thoughts. I am attaching a poor photo of part of my Liverpool OTC/Cadets collection. I dont know about the Liverpool Collegiate OTC,they were interestingly affilated at one time to the South Lancs regt. and then later to the Liverpool Scottish. Peter |

Liverpools
Following on from the last post is a picture of a cigarette card which confirms the white metal badge worn by the 7th Liverpools.

I just bought this one with 3 other TA/yeo badges. It was not cheap ($20 Australian) but I have not seen one for sale for ages.

Nice badge, they go for double that over here !
Although PB has shown the evidence for this being 7th Bn, there is, curiously, nothing in the ACD records for all WM 7th Bn badges either of the 1908 or 1926 patterns. I have one of these with lugs that I assme is 1908+ perhaps with the sliders coming a little later !? (The same goes for the 1908 8th Bn badges. Conversely I have a 2nd VB with slider, so it seems that TF production - distinctly outside WO control before 1915 - was a bit haphazard !) Incidentally, I now think the evidence that 9th Bn only wore 'regular' BM badges is overwhelming. |

Julian,
You are correct as ever about the value. One sold at Bosley's for £40 plus all of the overheads. Alan |

Alan, the Bosleys one was a 1926 pattern. They go for around 40 at fairs and ebay (there's one on right now for 39). But the 1908 ones - like the one you just got - are on average a little more, I've seen them up to 55. J

It is a small world, the badge just sold by Bosleys ( lot 133 )was offered for sale previously here on the Forum at £35 but with no takers. It was acquired from Hugh King many years ago when he used to do the occasional list of badges for sale.

The one question that I have left is whether this badge was used on all forms of dress or was reserved for the Bn's No1 Dress hats (walking out dress)? Alan |
